Super Caley Go Ballistic Celtic Are Atrocious

Date: 30 December 2003

Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s stunning victory against John Barnes’ Celtic, which eventually saw him get the sack as manager has been voted the most memorable Scottish Cup shock of all time in a poll by Tote Bookmakers. The amazing result which has been immortalized by The Sun’s legendary headline polled an impressive 27% of the overall vote. Thistle’s repeat result against Celtic in 2003 also made the top ten.

With this Saturday being the third round of the Scottish Cup teams like Berwick Rangers who face Hearts and Ross County who play Celtic will be hoping that they can reach the same heady heights of giant killers of the past.

In second place, is the game that many believe was the first true giant killing result from the modern Scottish Cup - Berwick Rangers beating the mighty Glasgow Rangers 1-0 in 1967. Giant killing veteran Adrian Sprott took part in two of the shocks which made the list. Firstly, in 1987 scoring the winner as Hamilton beat Rangers in the third round (16%) and then again in 1995 when his Stenhousemuir side defeated Aberdeen (8%).

Joe Scanlon, Managing Director of Tote Bookmakers commented,” The magic of the cup is truly captivated when the minnows are pitched against the big boys in the third round. This year is no different and if Ross County beat Celtic at 25/1 it would certainly be as big if not bigger than the Caley Thistle result of 2000.
