Interview with Trevor Beaumont, Chief Executive
of the tote
Trevor Beaumont joined the tote as Chief Executive in November 2004.
He previously was the MD at ukbetting and prior to that had an extensive
career with the Coral Group becoming MD at Coral Eurobet as well as
being a Racing Director of the BHB.
What attracted you to joining the tote?
The tote organisation is a well recognised brand in the UK betting industry;
with an equally impressive heritage and reputation. I was well aware
of Peter Jones’ vision for the tote and it is one that I share.
When the opportunity to head up the company arose it was my chance to
move into a dream job.
What are your first impressions of the company?
I have been here only a relatively short space of time but there are
some things that have become immediately apparent to me. We have a very
dedicated workforce that is full of energy and enthusiasm about the
business and the industry. There is a lot of talent within the company
which needs to be harnessed, developed and focused towards delivering
commercial returns.
I have plenty of ideas on how to progress the business. With the assistance
of the Executive Committee we will develop a strategy for taking the
business forward, which will be announced over the coming months.
Do you see the privatisation process as a hindrance?
Not at all. If anything this has made the climate of the business even
more exciting and allows us to exploit many opportunities to secure
the future of the business.
You have a wide association with the racing industry could you
give some further detail on your experience within the betting industry?
For the majority of my career, 27 years, I worked for the Coral Group.
Having worked my way up through the organisation I have had the opportunity
to gain experience in many areas in the industry. In particular my experience
in working in the highly geared environment of venture capital ownership
will be particularly relevant to the tote going forward.
Being a Racing Director at the BHB before going on to ukbetting enabled
me to see the betting industry from a different perspective. As MD of
the betting and Gaming division at ukbetting I was operating in a very
fast moving sector of the industry; the developments in the gaming aspect
of the business offer fresh opportunities that can’t be ignored.
It is these developments that will undoubtedly be a cornerstone of the
business of the future betting sector. Likewise totepool affords us
the opportunity to grow a major sector of our product portfolio across
many delivery channels.
I feel that my experience has given me a unique position to analyse
the industry from both sides of the fence and therefore appreciate the
challenges and opportunities that lay ahead.
Does that mean that you will be driving the tote into the future
with new products?
It would be premature to say anything at the moment but watch this space.
